Nature of Work


The Dental Hygienist is a licensed, professional member of the health care team who integrates the roles of educator, consumer advocate, practitioner, manager, change agent, and researcher to support total health through the promotion of oral health and wellness. Most Dental Hygienists work as integral members of the dental team in private dental offices, but many provide preventive and educational services in hospitals, military installations, and schools.
 

Program Description


The Dental Hygiene Program at the College of Southern Nevada is located at the Charleston Campus in the Health Sciences Center (HSC), at the intersection of Torrey Pines and West Charleston. The HSC features a contemporary dental hygiene clinic equipped with the latest in radiology facilities, dental units, computer patient tracking, hands-off washing stations, and disinfection and sterilization capabilities. Classrooms offer state-of-the-art visual equipment and laboratory facilities. Faculty members are highly qualified dental and dental hygiene professionals with diverse backgrounds rich in clinical and academic experience.
 

Accreditation


The CSN program in dental hygiene is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of “approval without reporting requirements”. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Admission Requirements


This is a Limited Entry Program.  Therefore, an application for admission must be submitted by the application deadline and all prerequisite requirements must be completed by the completion deadline in order to be eligible for consideration.  This material is reviewed using selection criteria set by the program.  Applicants are notified of their standing by the Limited Entry office.

NOTE: Students who have taken the TEAS exam from another state and/or institution must have all their scores officially transferred to CSN before their specified application deadline. An unofficial copy must also be presented with their limited entry application packet.

Program Description


The BSDH Degree Completion program is offered 100% online to better enable working professionals a more flexible opportunity to continue their educational goal of a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Students can choose a specialization in either Public Health or Education. Both tracks include core coursework in research, leadership, teaching methodology, and public health principles. In addition to dental hygiene core courses, students complete upperdivision general education course work in Educational Psychology, Philosophy, Communication, and English.

Being a student in the College of Southern Nevada Bachelor ofScience in Dental Hygiene Completion Program indicates a dedication to the dental hygiene profession and the desire to acquire additional knowledge and responsibilities. Students are expected to represent the profession and institution with the utmost ethical behavior. Inherent in upper-division coursework, students are expected to utilize exceptional critical thinking skills, exhibit problem-based learning, and evidence-based decision-making. In exhibiting these attributes, the student will further their professional capabilities and advance the profession. The BSDH program makes heavy demands upon students in regards to self-determination and time management. Due to the online nature of the program, students must comply with a very stringent academic integrity policy.
 

Accreditation


The BSDH program is accredited by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities and is a college transferable degree.

The Bachelor of Science Program allows registered dental hygienists the opportunity to pursue an advanced degree on a part-time or full-time basis given their individual needs, previous education and experience. The degree allows graduates the opportunity to build upon their current knowledge, enhance their current professional role and advance to broader careers to meet Nevada's growing public health and education needs.

College of Southern Nevada's baccalaureate graduates will be qualified for an array of challenging career opportunities in public health, administration, teaching, research, management and related fields.

The program can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis.
